Are angels really God's messengers ?

Jubilation by: Gwendy Bartolini

Angels, from the latin Angelus or άγγελος  in Greek

Such a magical word ~
a word filled with intrigue
a word filled with mystique
a word filled with hope
Are they real ?
Did they really exist ?
If so where are they now ?
Who are they ?
Where are they?
From what place did they come from?
Did Michaelangelo and Bernini know something we don't?

 Makes you wonder ...

Angel is also from the Greek word angelos, which means messenger. Malakh, the Hebrew word for angel, also means messenger, and both words nicely coincide with the Persian word for angel, angaros, similarly meaning a courier. Angels were also found within Sumerian, Babylonian, Persian, Egyptian and Greek writings.Angels are said to be creatures of good, spirits of love, and messengers of the savior Jesus Christ.

325 A.D. that the Council of Nicea made belief in angels a part of dogma. This stimulated theological discussions and writings on angels that have continued to the present.

The word angel it self, I understand is used in a christian devotion -which derives from the latin. Angelus,  Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ, practised by reciting as versicle and response three Biblical verses describing the mystery; alternating with the salutation "Hail Mary!" The Angelus exemplifies a species of prayers called the prayer of the devotee.

The devotion was traditionally recited in Roman Catholic churches, convents, and monasteries three times daily: 6:00 am, noon, and 6:00 pm (many churches still follow the devotion, and some practice it at home).
Visions of Angels by: Gwendy Bartolini

It is said that Angels bridge the huge gap between the holiness and perfection of God in heaven and the shortcomings of dying people on this planet. Angels were made immortal .

According to medieval Christian theologians, the Angels are organized into several orders, or Angelic Choirs.[1][2]

Archangel Gabriel by: Gwendy Bartolini

The most influential of these classifications was that put forward by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite in the 4th or 5th century, in his book "The Celestial Hierarchy". However, during the Middle Ages, many schemes were proposed, some drawing on and expanding on Pseudo-Dionysius, others suggesting completely different classifications (some authors limited the number of Choirs to seven). Several other hierarchies were proposed, some in nearly inverted order. Scholars of the Middle Ages believed that angels and archangels were lowest in the order and were the only angels directly involved in the affairs of the world of men.

The authors of The Celestial Hierarchy and the Summa Theologica drew on passages from the New Testament, specifically Ephesians 1:21 and Colossians 1:16, in an attempt to reveal a schema of three Hierarchies, Spheres or Triads of angels, with each Hierarchy containing three Orders or Choirs.

From the comparative study of the Old Testament and New Testament passages, including their etymology and semantics, the above mentioned theological works (which contain variations), and esoteric Christian teachings, the descending order of rank can be inferred as following:

The Assumption of the Virgin by Francesco Botticini at the National Gallery London, shows three hierarchies and nine orders of angels, each with different characteristics First Sphere (Old Testament sources)

Celestial Powers

The Celestial Hierarchy

from: Dionysius the Areopagite

'There are nine Orders of Angels, figures of the nine Archetypes in God; and each one obtains a name corresponding to the property in God which it exhibits.'

Which is the first Order of the Celestial Beings, which the middle, and which the last?

I hold that none but the Divine Creator by whom they were ordained is able to know fully the number and the nature of the supermundane Beings and the regulation of their sacred Hierarchies; and furthermore, that they know their own powers and illuminations and their own holy supermundane ordination. For we could not have known the mystery of these supercelestial Intelligences and all the holiness of their perfection had it not been taught to us by God through His Ministers who truly know their own natures.

Therefore we will say nothing as from ourselves, but being instructed will set forth, according to our ability, those angelic visions which the venerable theologians have beheld.

Theology has given to the Celestial Beings nine interpretative names, and among these our divine initiator distinguishes three threefold Orders.(5) In the first rank of all he places those who, as we are told, dwell eternally in the constant presence of God, and cleave to Him, and above all others are immediately united to Him. And he says that the teachings of the holy Word testify that the most holy Thrones and many-eyed and many-winged ones, named in the Hebrew tongue Cherubim and Seraphim, are established immediately about God and nearest to Him above all others. Our venerable hierarch describes this threefold Order as a co-equal unity, and truly the most exalted of the Hierarchies, the most fully Godlike, and the most closely and immediately united to the First Light of the Godhead.

The second, he says, contains the Powers, Virtues and Dominions, and the last and lowest choirs of the Celestial Intelligences are called Angels, Archangels and Principalities.

In accepting this order of the holy Hierarchies we affirm that the names of each of the Celestial Choirs expresses its own Godlike characteristic.
*********************

And now I pray that I may speak worthily of those most exalted Intelligences, and as their Hierarchy is revealed in the Scriptures.

The Choirs

* Perhaps because celestial beings were believed to continuously sing the praises of God the levels of the angels are arranged into nine choirs.Which are grouped into three Hierarchies.

*In descedning order of the closeness to God they are said to be:

First Hierarchy                Second Hierarchy             Third Hierarchy
Seraphim                         Dominions                           Principalities
Cherubim                          Virtues                                Archangels
Thrones                             Powers                               Angels

Seraphim
We are told by Hebrew scholars that the holy name Seraphim means 'those who kindle or make hot',

In Christianity In medieval Christian theology, the Seraphim belong to the highest order, or angelic choir, of the Christian angelic hierarchy. They are the caretakers of God's throne, continuously singing "holy, holy, holy" (the Sanctus).
In Judaism The 12th century scholar Maimonides placed the seraphim in the fifth of ten ranks of angels in his exposition of the Jewish angelic hierarchy,

St. Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae offers a description of the nature of the Seraphim:

"The name 'Seraphim' does not come from charity only, but from the excess of charity, expressed by the word ardor or fire. Hence Dionysius (Coel. Hier. vii) expounds the name 'Seraphim' according to the properties of fire, containing an excess of heat. Now in fire we may consider three things.

"First, the movement which is upwards and continuous. This signifies that they are borne inflexibly towards God."

"Secondly, the active force which is 'heat,' which is not found in fire simply, but exists with a certain sharpness, as being of most penetrating action, and reaching even to the smallest things, and as it were, with superabundant fervor; whereby is signified the action of these angels, exercised powerfully upon those who are subject to them, rousing them to a like fervor, and cleansing them wholly by their heat.

"Thirdly we consider in fire the quality of clarity, or brightness; which signifies that these angels have in themselves an inextinguishable light, and that they also perfectly enlighten others."

Cherubim

We are told that Cherubim denotes abundance of knowledge or an outflowing of wisdom.

*****************
Thrones (Gr. thronoi) (New Testament sources)

denotes that which is exempt from and untainted by any base and earthly thing, and the supermundane ascent up the steep.

Second Sphere (New Testament sources)

Dominions (Gr. Kyriotetai)

Virtues (Gr. Dynamai)

Powers (Gr. Exusiai)[3]

Third Sphere

Principalities (Gr. Archai)[4]

The name of the Celestial Principalities signifies their Godlike princeliness and authoritativeness in an Order which is holy and most fitting to the princely Powers

Archangels - Archangeloi

The choir of the holy Archangels is placed in the same threefold Order as the Celestial Principalities; for, as has been said, there is one Hierarchy and Order which includes these and the Angels. But since each Hierarchy has first, middle and last ranks, the holy Order of Archangels, through its middle position, participates in the two extremes, being joined with the most .holy Principalities and with the holy Angels.

Angels - Angeloi

fill up and complete the lowest choir of all the Hierarchies of the Celestial Intelligences since they are the last of the Celestial Beings possessing the angelic nature. And they, indeed, are more properly named Angels by us than are those of a higher rank because their choir is more directly in contact With manifested and mundane things.

Who are our Guardian Angels?

No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent, for to His Angels God has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Prayer to Archangel Michael

Sancte Michael Archangele,

defende nos in proelio;

contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.

Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:

tuque, Princeps militiae Caelestis,

satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,

qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo,

divina virtute in infernum detrude.

Amen.[4]

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle;

be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:

and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,

by the power of God,

thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.[5]

The English translations used in various countries differed slightly.

Celestial Languages = Langauges of the Angels?

Some are more ancient than others and all are shrouded in mystery. As with Hebrew, to which they bear some resemblance, they are written from right to left. The Celestial Alphabet The Celestial Alphabet was never a language form as we would understand it, it has never been a spoken or written language in human terms. It is a metaphysical alphabet, deriving from Hebrew and from Qabalistic teachings where there is reference to “eye writings/ketav einayim.” Here the Eye refers to the Eye of God, which may have evolved from the Eye of Ra/the Sun. The eye became I and I am. This script has come down through the ages and borrowed from ideas of Alchemy and Sacred Geometry and fused with other ideas of Angels and languages.

Enochian alphabet    Enochian

Enochian is a name often applied to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley in the late 16th century. The men claimed that it was revealed to them by angels. Some contemporary scholars of magick consider it a constructed language that is nonetheless viable for magickal workings, while other scholars of constructed languages simply consider it a very poor imitation of an ancient language, with grammar derived primarily from English.

Malachim alphabet  Malachim

The Malachim alphabet is derived from the Hebrew and Greek alphabets. It was created by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa during the 16th Century and is still said to be used by Freemasons to a limited extent. This version is from Bartolozzi's Biblioteca Magna Rabbinica, 1675

Passing the River alphabet  Passing the River alphabet

The Passing the River or Passage du Fleuve alphabet is derived from the Hebrew alphabet and was created by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa during the 16th Century.

Theban alphabet

The Theban alphabet is also known as the Theban Script or Angelic Script, and it is said that it's one of several different scripts used to communicate with angels. It's also said that, when someone wants to petition an angel for help, it's more powerful if written with this script. The Theban alphabet has been said to be used by witches, pagans, and wiccans to cast spells, either by writing out the glyphs and then burning the paper, or carving them in ceremonial stones.

Alphabet of the Magi  Alphabet of the Magi

The Alphabet of the Magi was invented by Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (also known as Paracelsus) in the 16th century. He used it to engrave the names of angels on talismans which he claimed could treat illnesses and provide protection. It was probably influenced by the various other magical alphabets that were around at the time and also by the Hebrew script.

Partial list of Watchers

There are 20 leaders in the Book of Enoch also called 1 Enoch the section that mentions them reads:

“ 7. And these are the names of their leaders: Sêmîazâz, their leader, Arâkîba, Râmêêl, Kôkabîêl, Tâmîêl, Râmîêl, Dânêl, Êzêqêêl, Barâqîjâl, Asâêl, Armârôs, Batârêl, Anânêl, Zaqîêl, Samsâpêêl, Satarêl, Tûrêl, Jômjâêl, Sariêl. 8. These are their chiefs of tens." - R. H. Charles translation, The Book of the Watchers, Chapter VI. ”

These are the leaders of 200 angels in 1 Enoch that are turned into fallen Angels due to their taking wives, mating with human women, and teaching forbidden knowledge.

Araqiel (also Arakiel, Araqael, Araciel, Arqael, Sarquael, Arkiel, Arkas) [8] taught humans the signs of the earth. However, in the Sibylline Oracles, Araqiel is referred to not as a fallen angel, or Watcher, but as one of the 5 angels who lead the souls of men to judgement, the other 4 being Ramiel, Uriel, Samiel, and Azazel.

Armaros (also Amaros) in Enoch I taught men the resolving of enchantments.

Azazel[9] taught men to make knives, swords, shields, and how to devise ornaments and cosmetics.

Gadriel taught the art of cosmetics.

Baraqel (Baraqiel) taught men astrology[10]

Bezaliel mentioned in Enoch I, left out of most translations due to damaged manuscripts and problematic transmission of the text.

Chazaqiel (sometimes Ezeqeel) taught men the signs of the clouds (meteorology).[8]

Kokabiel (also Kakabel, Kochbiel, Kokbiel, Kabaiel, and Kochab),[11] is a high-ranking, holy angel but, in general apocryphal lore and also in Enoch I, he is a fallen Watcher, resident of nether realms, and commands 365,000 surrogate spirits to do his bidding. Among other duties, he instructs his fellows in astrology.

Penemue[12] "taught mankind the art of writing with ink and paper," and taught "the children of men the bitter and the sweet and the secrets of wisdom."

Sariel (also Suriel) taught mankind about the courses of the moon (at one time regarded as forbidden knowledge).[13]

Samyaza (also Shemyazaz, Shamazya, Semiaza, Shemhazi, Semyaza and Amezyarak) is one of the leaders of the fall from heaven.[14]

Shamsiel, once a guardian of Eden,[15] served as one of the 2 chief aides to the archangel Uriel (the other aide being Hasdiel) when Uriel bore his standard into battle, and is the head of 365 legions of angels and also crowns prayers, accompanying them to the 5th heaven. He is referred to[16] as one of the Watchers. He is a fallen angel who teaches the signs of the sun.[17]
